First two weeks in South Africa

Hi everyone,

Greetings from South Africa where the weather is very much like we have in Ireland with the occasional sunny day where it gets really hot.

First two weeks have been amazing and really not what I expected.  I am living in an apartment with 7 other girls just along the harbour.  I am working in a school called ACJ Primary School with 1900 children.  I take children out one to one for numeracy, then a group of children for reading at Grade 4 and then we share an after school workshop of  children of mixed grades.  The children are beautiful and so full of life.  They love to sing and dance as well as work and play. They truly are amazing.

As well as us teaching in the school another group of volunteers take all the classes for sports - and it looks mental but they're having great fun.  School starts at 8am for them and 9am for us.  It is much more laid back than Ireland in the sense that breaks are when the principal Mr Sifole decides and children are dished out a small meal of rice and soup.  This could be at 10am, 12noon .. whenever it is decided on the day.

Last weekend we spent our first weekend in Cape Town where it was out of this world.  Climbed some of Table Mountain and nearly had a heart attack when we were only 1/10 and we had a hell of a long way to go... hahaha.  We went to a traditional African restaurant called Mama Africas and the food here was fantastic.  On the Sunday we took a tour around Cape Town visiting Nature Reserves and climbed Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, spectacular experience.

I have taken loads of photos but unfortunately no cable to upload them so will upload when I am home in two weeks. Cannot believe how fast time is going. This weekend we are heading on a safari and tomorrow we will take the wine tour.... everyone is really looking forward to that.  Hopefully next weekend we get to Robben Island and we will get to a traditional township tour where we will get to go to a Gospel Church and see how they do it... cannot wait for that.

Sorry it has taken me so long to update the blog. Internet cafés close quite early and time is restricted on them.  I'll try update more soon.

Bye for now,

Aimée
